The aquamarine gemstone is a member of the beryl family. It is usually clear, but iron content gives aquamarine its blue/green color. In the past, the most valued aquamarine stones were green. Today, however, the most valued aquamarine stones are a rich, sky blue.

March also features the ever-beautiful Sky Blue Topaz gem. In its pure form it is colorless. Impurities and/or heat treatment are what cause variations in the colors. Sky blue topaz is much more affordable than aquamarine because supplies of topaz are more readily available while aquamarine is the rarer of the two gemstones.

Aquamarine has a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, and topaz has a hardness of 8; so both of these March birthstones are durable enough for everyday wear. To clean these gemstones use warm water, mild dish soap, and a toothbrush.
