Happy New Year one and all! A new year means a fresh start, new year's resolutions, and yes, another Birthday! Those that were born in the month of January are blessed with a wonderful, BEAUTIFUL gemstone: Garnet. The name “garnet” comes from the Latin word “Garanatus,” meaning “seedlike,” in reference to the pomegranate color Garnet resembles.
The garnet is a very durable gemstone (6.5-7.5 on the Mohs scale) found all over the world, including Wyoming, Czech Republic, Greece, Russian, Tanzania, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and India.
Garnet is an ancient stone, used in a variety of applications, and is one of the most plentiful stones. There is hardly any other gem that unites such a broad spectrum of color and luster, as well as rarity and size of widely varying gemstones. The name garnet actually refers to a diverse group of silicate minerals including: almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, andradite, mozambique and uvarovite, each presenting different color, clarity, and value. Garnets can range in color from clear to yellow, to orange, to shades of red, and even to green.
Pictured below is a Spessartite garnet. Spessartite garnet is an orange to red-brown garnet, that boasts bright citrus shades. The name, "spessartine" comes from the Bavarian word, "Spessart", meaning "forest", which is a mountain range in Germany where spessartine garnet deposits were found in the 1880s.
Below is a beautiful cushion cut Brazilian Garnet paired with 14k yellow gold. This garnet is a deep red with flashes of purple and pink.
Garnets are truly unique beautiful! Here is a dainty earring/pendant set in white gold, great for daily wear.
